Property Description
Bangall-Amenia Road
Stanfordville
This 1690 frame farmhouse was moved brick-by-brick and beam-by-beam from the Massachusetts-Rhode Island border to this prime location in 1982 by master craftsman and builder Frederick Babcock. The owner of this postage stamp size parcel pays taxes on 10 acres while being surrounded by 2,000 contiguous acres of Dutchess Land Conservancy easements.(Bangall-Amenia Road is the heart of the DLC easement conservation program). The house is about 100 yards up a private Road (Babcock Way) from Bangall-Amenia Road, considered one of the most scenic County Roads in all of Dutchess County. The private road is shared with the 160 acre estate known as Tall Trees Farm which is about a quarter mile further up the hill and is host to the Millbrook Hunt twice a year.
The original portion of the two-story house is about 28ft x 28ft. It consists of a living room with large bread-oven fireplace, dining room with fireplace, den with fireplace, and powder room on the first floor; two bedrooms (one with fireplace) and one bath on the second floor; a full basement with washer and dryer; and a semi-finished room, under the eaves, on a partial third floor. The beams throughout the house date from 1700 as do some portions of the floors; the balance of the beautiful wide-board heart pine floors date from the nineteenth century. The brick in all the fireplaces is the original brick dating from 1700.
There is a large covered wood back porch and a stone patio in front facing beautiful Ryder Pond.
There was a 22ft x 36ft addition put on in 1984 consisting of kitchen and master bedroom with bath on the first floor; and a large all-purpose room (currently a play room) under the eaves above. There is also a stone-floor mudroom with washer and dryer and beverage refrigerator as well as an attached two-car garage. The kitchen was completely re-designed in 2007 with new cabinets, a vintage chestnut floor, Sub Zero glass-front refrigerator, Wolf gas range, Viking electric wall ovens and Fisher Paykel double dishwasher.
New Thermopane windows and doors were installed in 2007 throughout the house. A new cedar shingle roof was installed in 2008. The chimneys were pointed on the exterior and new lightning rods put in place in 2006. A new oil furnace and boiler were installed in 2008.
Twenty feet from the back porch is a 24ft x 27ft building which currently serves as an office and TV room. It has a tile floor, a bay window and light from three sides.
The beautifully-landscaped thousand-square-foot guest house was built in 2005. It has two bedrooms, two baths and a large living/dining room with open kitchen. It has radiant floor heating throughout. There is a deck with one of the best Northern Dutchess views anywhere. Many local landscape painters have spent days on this site.
There are currently two separate post-and-rail fenced pastures encompassing about half of the 10 acres. The run-in shed in the lower pasture nearest the house is detailed to match the house exactly (cedar shingles, red paint, etc.).
